On Year Later - Reverse Culture Shock; Returning to a Life of Adulting

As some readers may already know, one year ago I returned to Canada after living in South Korea for 11 years. I knew when I made the decision to come home that I would be going through big changes, but I didn't know what they would be, and what challenges would come along with them.  Now, one year later, I've gone through several ups and downs. Here are just a few of them.  The first thing I should address is why I came home. A few friends who have heard me rave about Korea often ask why I left if there were so many perks to living there. Making the decision to return was probably the hardest one I've ever made. I was comfortable, I had a decent job, little bills to pay and good friends. I had paid off my student loans, and finally found ways to overcome my anxiety. I loved the food, culture and the convenient way of life that Korean people live. Why would I want to come back to Canada?  Friends and Family The first reason was because of my grandmother. A few years...

29 Things I've Learned in 29 Years

Image
Well, HI there! It's been a hot minute since I wrote a blog. My birthday is upon us, and in honor of me getting OLD, I thought I would share with you 29 things I've learned throughout my life so far.  Now things are MY thoughts, and they do not reflect the opinions of others, nor are they facts. So without further adieu, in no particular order, 29 things I've learned in 29 years.  1. If you don't do the dishes right away, they may never get done. 2. Fitness, as well as skin care, should be proactive, not reactive .  3. More space often means more stuff. 4. Google is not a doctor, I repeat.... Google is not a doctor. 5. Traveling doesn't have to be expensive. It doesn't have to be a luxury thing that one treats themselves with. And women CAN and SHOULD travel alone sometimes.🌏  6. Extroverts need alone time too.  7. I hate winter in every country.☃ 8. It's often nicer to see things with your own eyes, rather than through a lens.  9. ...

Tips For Starting To Eat Healthier

Image
In my last post I listed tips on how to start your fitness journey, and if you remember one of my points was about diet. This week I am going to give a few tips on cleaning up your diet. Now when I say diet, I do not mean "a diet", I mean the way you eat. Diets are stupid and usually not sustainable. I think we should be able to eat healthy and not feel like we are restricting ourselves, and eating things we just don't like.  1. Eliminate processed food  Any fitness guru, doctor or nutritionist will tell you that these "foods" are not good for our body. Most of these products contain so many ingredients, many that we can't even pronounce. Eating these products will not only be harmful to your health, it will make your fitness journey more difficult than it should be.  Some of the additives such as high-fructose corn syrup, colorants, and artificial flavorings have been linked to numerous health conditions such as  heart disease, diabetes, obesity and ...

Steps To Starting Your Fitness Journey

Image
Through watching many Youtube videos and hearing many different opinions and variations from others, I have heard so many methods to beginning and keeping on your fitness journey. I decided to take them and put the ones I think are most important and beneficial to me when trying to be come fit and healthy. Note that I am not a professional and these are just my opinions, but I do think they are valid.  1. Figure out WHY do you want to start. So you have decided that you want to get healthier through fitness and eating, but why have you decided this? What is the purpose of this new desired change in lifestyle? What is it about doing this that drives you to want to start? Everyone has their own journey. Some are looking to lose weight, some to gain and some to build muscle. Some may want to do it for the mental aspect. Hopefully what ever your reason is, you are doing it for you.  2. Decide WHAT is your goal or target. Perhaps this is in conjunction with number...

I Have Come to LOVE (and crave) Working Out

Image
We are told throughout our lives from the time we are kids that exercise is important to stay healthy. We know it, even if we don't all like it. Everyone has their own "thing" and exercise, fitness and sports definitely isn't it for everyone. I used to be one of those people, but in the last few years my mind has totally shifted and it has become one of the most important things in my life.  When I was young I was somewhat active, as many children are, but as a teenager and even as a university-going young adult, I was very lazy and didn't care that much about fitness, and felt it wasn't necessary. I was still young and I felt as though I didn't really need it and that since I was still young I wouldn't gain weight really if I disregarded my diet as well. When I looked in the mirror I never saw myself gaining weight (but I was), and I never thought about the fact that my clothes were getting tighter. I was going to the gym for a class here and there ...

Why I Prefer Travelling Alone (And Why Everyone Should Try It)

Image
During my time living abroad, I've had a few opportunities to travel around to nearby countries. A big reason for moving to South Korea was so that I could travel to new places. At that time the idea of travelling alone was so scary and I thought what could be more dangerous or boring.  My first vacation while in Korea was back home to Canada because I didn't have anyone to go on vacation with at the time.  I realise now that it can be the complete opposite of what I though, and now don't want to travel any other way. Firstly, I have found that I am much more likely to make new friends when I am travelling alone. When you are travelling with a friend, you might feel like you don't really need to make friends. You came together and you plan to hang out together. You don't have to worry about eating alone or who is going to take pictures of you by that cool thing. When you travel alone, as fun as it may be to take selfies and food pics, its nice to have some company...

When Will You Come Back to Being Normal?

A little while ago I got off the phone from talking to a family member, making my rounds of calls for some belated holiday greetings.  I was eager to talk to them until I got the question (or request I hate most). "When are you going to come back to reality? It's time to come back to normal life and make a plan."  I got a little annoyed with this and asked "What exactly is normal" to which they replied "Living in North America or Europe." I am from a small city in Atlantic Canada where everybody knows you (and if not you then your parents), and ever since my first trip to a foreign country when I was fourteen years old, I've been obsessed with the world. I've always been fascinated by different cultures, languages, maps, travelling, passports and  all things that go along with travelling. When I was 19 I took my first big trip; A 2 week tour through Europe, with a day or two stopping in each place. It gave me a good idea of where I wanted to...
